How to winterize my 15x 42 Metal Frame Intex Pool?
I wanted to see if someone can help me.. i have a 15x 42 Intex Metal Frame pool and i want to leave it up. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? I know I need to lightly shock it, and then drain some water. I am not sure if I need to drain it below the Inlet and the skimmer... Please help???????? Thanks
Winterizing an above ground is actually quite simple. More so than an inground since you likely don't have a heater or any intricate plumbing.
Fist off, the week before you plan to end the season, balance your water chemistry. This is important. It's more than just pH and Cl. You need the total alkalinity in balance as well. Don't think about putting the pool down for the season until you have it balanced.
On closing day, simply vac the pool on waste or drain ( if yours is a sand filter). That cleans the pool and drops the water level quickly. If yours is a cartridge filter, then vac the pool normally.
You'll want to drop the level to just under the return. You won't be able to do this with your pump alone unless you jury rig some plumbing to the pump, so the most common method folk use is to set up a siphon utilizing their vac hose. It's almost as fast as a pump. When the water level is down to just below the return or skimmer ( whichever is lowest) you need to :
1/ Remove the drain plugs from the pump (2 usually) and the filter (either cartridge or sand filter have 1). If yours is a sand filter, set the dial valve to "winterize" or if there is no "winterize"..then set it half way between any setting. This gets the keystem gasket off the main body of the multiport and keeps it in one piece until spring. If you leave it in any position, you run the risk of the gasket sticking to the body and when you turn the dial first time on spring...it's tear the gasket. If yours is a cartridge filter then simply remove and clean the element. Store in a dry place not in direct sunlight.
2/ You need to get rid of water in the plumbing. How you do this is different in every pool set up. You may simply unclamp the plumbing from the pump and filter or you can use a wet dry vac to blow the water out without unclamping anything.
3/ Remove any pressure gauges and give them a shake to dump water in them. Put them along with all your drain plugs into your pump basket. Take that basket inside for storage.
4/ If you have a long plumbing run or are unsure if you got all the water out of your lines, consider using RV (recreational vehicle) or Plumber's anti freeze in the lines. It's safe for pools. Do NOT use automobile antifreeze. It's toxic and also oily.
5/ Once you're confident of your lines and equipment winterizing then it''s time to plug both your skimmer and return with either an ABS threaded plug with teflon tape applied properly to it or use an expandable rubber plug. Both can be found at a pool shop.
6/ Time to put in a winterizing chemical kit. These usually come with a bag of shock, an algacide and a sequestering agent. The sequestering agent stops metal staining from dissolved metals in your water as the water temp drops and things fall out of solution.
7/ Now that you have some empty bottles from your winterizing kit...re use them. Put them in your skimmer with caps on tight. You can even partially fill them with some of the RV antifreeze to help them stay in the bottom of your skimmer ( where they need to be). These bottles will take the expansion of any ice that forms in that skimmer. The bottles crush..your skimmer doesn't explode. Good trade off. The kicker is..you can use the bottles and antifreeze next year if you want. They'll survive and so will your skimmer. The alternative is to buy what's called a "Gizmo". Seriously..that's what it's called. They trade marked it. It's a green plastic bottle with a 1 1/2 inch threaded bottom to screw into the skimmer hole. Same idea as the chemical bottles I mentioned ( the Gizmo takes the crush) but a Gizmo costs 10 bucks. Your choice.
8/ Put on the winter cover. It's up to you if you'd like to buy into the "pool pillow" hype. They really aren't needed but may make opening the pool easier if you expect a lot of debris on the cover since they deflect the junk to the sides of the pool within easy reach. Other than that...they serve no real purpose. Adjust the cable turnbuckle to be tight just under the top rail. You're done.
Keep an eye on the cover water level. If it looks to be putting strain on your cover, get out the syphon (or pump) and knock it down a bit. Above ground pool covers are notoriously smaller than they should be. Ideally they ought to go straight down the wall, make a 90 degree turn at water level and sit flat. Most don't and that's where the strain comes in from the cove formed at the walls from too small a cover. If this happens in spring due to rains..you may be best off to slip a garden hose under the cover and fill the pool a bit. That will take the strain off the cover as the water in the pool rises and displaces the water ON the cover. The cover will then sit back flush to the wall and eliminate any strain.
