Cleaning a Dirty Aquarium Easy & Fast

In order to pour fresh water into the tank you need about 30 minutes of work every week depending on the size of the tank.

The things that you are going to need are: a five gallon bucket that has never had chemicals or soap inside it. A hose or gravel cleaner, and also a bag of synthetic sea salt.

The work is split into two parts and the tank that has to be cleaned every week on the same day and the filters that need to be cleaned every 2 or 3 weeks.

The most important thing before you start cleaning your tank is to unplug the tank heater. The heater should not be removed from the tank while it is hot and it also should be unplugged for about 20 minutes before removing.

The water will cool the glass of the heater and if it is removed it will break. When you put your hand in the water to be sure that the heater is not only off but also unplugged. If there is a small crack in the heater it may be fatal to you.

If the heater is off you can safely remove it from the tank or you can submerge it to the bottom of the tank.

Take away all the decoration from the tank so that the only thing there to be the small gravel. This will help you get rid of the dirt that the decorations may have gathered.

Now you can take with you the gravel cleaner. You have to stir the gravel to remove the dirt that has gathered between it in the water and to start removing the water from the bucket with a hose.

You should not throw the water because you will still need it for cleaning the filters.

If you have gravel cleaner, put the plastic tube into the gravel while it hits the bottom of the tank. After that start siphoning into the bucket and every second or two, move the gravel cleaner for an inch and repeat it until you have removed 15 percent of the tank water and you have cleaned all the gravel.

At this moment you can clean the aquarium filters. The inside of the filters are used for growing bacteria and this will help getting rid of the nitrites that are from uneaten food and fish waste.

In order not to kill the aquarium friendly bacteria, clean the filter materials and the sponges into the dirty water.

Take away everything from the filters and clean them in the bucket of dirty aquarium water, squeeze the sponge a few times, reassemble the filters and put them back in the tank.

Before you add water, sea salt must be added to the tank. All water has some slat in it and in order to replicate the natural habitat of the fish, there should be salt in it. The dosage is one cup of salt for about 50 gallons of water.

You can also add water to the tank but make sure that the water temperature is about a degree or two to that of the tank.

If there is a change in the tank temperature, fish can get killed or their immune system will weaken and they may catch a disease.

It is better to fill in the tank with hot water and check it regularly until it gets to the temperature of the tank. After that add water to the tank, start the filters and the heaters.

You have to clean the filters once or twice a month but the water in the tank must be cleaned on the same day every week.
