Pool Filter Cleaning Is Important In Order To Keep Your Filter Working Properly

Pool filter cleaning comes in many different forms as there are different types of filters.

When to clean your pool filter depends largely on how often the pool is used and how large your pool filter is.

It also comes with practice – you gradually know when to clean the pool filter after more use.

But, how do you clean your pool filter? That would depend on the type of pool filter, as each are cleaned differently.

Cleaning a sand pool filter

This is done through a backwashing process.

Usually clean it when the pressure gauge is reading 8-10 lbs above the clean starting pressure.

Backwashing involves turning a valve so that the filter process works backwards, and the dirt is flushed out.

Sand filters usually come with either a multiport valve or a push-pull (or slide) valve.

When backwashing, always shut off the pump motor and refer to your filter's manual.

Make sure that you watch the pressure gauge for backpressure during the backwashing process, and watch the backwashing hose for kinks. Be ready to shut everything off if something is wrong.

The sand might need refilling too.

Cleaning a cartridge filter

Remove the cartridge and gently rinse of loose dirt and debris.

It's important to not use a spray nozzle as that could drive the dirt into the cartridge.

Afterwards, soak the cartridge in an alkaline based cartridge cleaner solution overnight.

Make sure it soaks in a container that is clean and thoroughly rinsed of any extra dirt.

Afterwards, rinse the cartridge thoroughly but again be careful not to point a nozzle straight at the cartridge membrane as this could force dirt back in again.

After this process is completed, you can put the cartridge back. Some cartridges filters use replaceable cartridges as well, which means you only need throw away and replace.

Cleaning DE filters

You should clean your DE filter at least once per swimming season.

The process is very similar to the way a cartridge is cleaned.

After backwashing the pool, take the DE cartridge out and gently clean off extra dirt.

Soak the cartridge in a TSP solution for about 12 hours, spray again thoroughly and replace into the pool. However, you may need to recoat the DE cartridge with more D.E.

These are the various ways of pool filter cleaning.
