Basic Stuff
Your choice in pool filters for both above ground and in ground pools are exactly the same, and there are really only three
main categories – sand, cartridge and DE (Diatomaceous Earth.)
Sand Filters
Sand Filters came onto the market about 30 years ago and are the most popular. This is because they are incredibly reliable.
Water passes through the filter and the sharp edges of the sand trap the debris and dirt in the pool water.
On a micron-to-micron basis, sand is unable to clean as well as the other types of filters, and can allow dirty particles to go back into
the pool - but the filter is incredibly efficient in every other respect.
To clean, a backwashing process must be done and the sand might need to be refilled. Fortunately, refills are inexpensive and
easy to do.
Cartridge Filters
As far as filtering out dirt is concerned, cartridge filters sit in between sand and DE filters.
The cartridge filter basically works with a paper-like filter material that traps the dirt. Cartridges also have a bigger surface area for
filtering (the majority of filters being at 300sqft, but you can get smaller or bigger sizes.)
Two kinds of cartridges could be used – disposable or replaceable. Disposable cartridges are less expensive but require regular changing.
Replaceable cartridges need to be cleaned at least once per season, and only replaced every five or so years (they can be expensive, though.)
Cleaning a cartridge requires the cartridge itself to be taken out, rinsed and soaked over night.
DE Filters
These use a substance called DE (Diatomaceous Earth) for the filter material. This is a porous powder which is made from the exoskeletons of
microscopic animals (diatoms) buried in deposits and fossilized millions of years ago.
It is capable of filtering out even the smallest amount of particles (from 5 to even 3 microns in size) and is therefore the best choice for
the cleanest pool. It also, usually, comes in three types – Spin DE, Regenerative DE and Vertical Grids.
The filtering process is all the same, but what changes is the design. DE Filters run at high pressures, though, which can bring other
disadvantages.
